Barry R. Wallerstein, D.Env. Background ince August 1995, AQMD has been utilizing the services of student interns employed through the Foundation. The Foundation provides AQMD with student interns who perform various assignments, including, but not limited to, administrative assistance, literature research, and other professional assignments. The assignments that are given to the student interns at the AQMD provide them with valuable work experience in a professional environment, while benefitting the AQMD. Although, the contractor is the Foundation, students from all Southern California colleges and universities which offer accredited degrees may participate in the program. Proposal Amend all existing contracts within the above-stated AQMD departments and the Foundation to set the term of the contracts to end concurrently on June 30, 2013. In addition, this Board action will add $20,000, $24,000, $38,000, $15,000, and $22,000 per year for Engineering and Compliance; Finance; Legislative and Public Affairs; Planning, Rule Development, and Area Sources; and the Science and Technology Advancement Office, respectively. This program generally supports three interns in Engineering & Compliance who are engaged in assisting with GIS mapping for more efficient compliance inspections as well as web updates to streamline permitting. In Finance, two interns work on various cash management and accounting duties in addition to assisting with the physical inventory of fixed assets. Three to five students will be assigned to work in Legislative and Public Affairs who will work on video and web outreach projects, preparing collaterals for outreach programs, and assisting in the implementation of the Clean Communities Plan. In Planning, Rule Development and Area Sources, two interns will be assigned to assist with gathering data for the upcoming AQMP, including land use/land cover, apportioning population, unpaved road data and spatial surrogates, as well as in the clean-up and organization of the GIS shared server, including software. Three student interns are typically engaged in Science and Technology Advancement to work in the laboratory for the maintenance of complex equipment and assisting with analytical procedures. Resource Impacts If approved, funding for the first year of the above-stated contracts is budgeted in the affected departments FY 2010-11 – Services and Supplies Major Object. Funding for the subsequent two one-year terms is contingent upon Board approval of the Budgets for FY 2011-12 and FY 2012-13. |
